Visiting an unusual beach can make your vacation extra special., so book your private jet charter and check out a few of our top choices:
Hoshizuna no Hama, Iriomote Island, Japan
Hoshizuna no Hama means “Star Sand Beach” in Japanese. If you study this beach closely, you’ll see the reason for the name. Located on the northern tip of remote Iriomote Island in Okinawa, each grain of sand on this spectacular beach is shaped like a tiny star and is actually a shell from a tiny single-cell ocean organism. This beach is also home to beautiful coral and exotic tropical fish, so be sure to bring your snorkeling gear!
Ramla Bay, Gozo, Malta
Called Ramla il-Hamra—the Red, Sandy Beach—the sand of Ramla Bay is an unusual shade of red. In addition to being a beautiful beach, Ramla I-Hamra is a historic site complete with three Roman ruins buried beneath the red sand. Residents believe that the Maltese island of Gozo is the location of the fictional island of Ogygia, Calypso’s Island in The Odyssey. A cave that overlooks the west side of Ramla Bay is said to have inspired the scene in which Odysseus was held prisoner by the nymph.
Hot Water Beach, Coromandel, New Zealand
Hate going to beach only to find that the water is freezing? New Zealand’s Hot Water Beach gives you a natural spa-like experience at the water’s edge. Beneath the sands are mineral springs that can reach up to 147 degrees Fahrenheit. When you go at the right time—two hours at the beginning and end of low tide—you can dig a hole and create your own personal hot tub.
Papakolea Beach, Hawaii
Break out your hiking shoes to reach the rugged shored of Papakolea Beach near Ka Lae, the southernmost point of the Big Island of Hawaii. After a three-mile hike along dazzling cliffs, you will be rewarded with the olive green sand and stunning ocean views of Papakolea Beach. The color of the sand comes from the mineral olivine produced by the Puu Mahana volcano. On the Big Island you’ll also find beaches with black, red, and grey sand colored through volcanic activity.
Gulpiyuri Beach, Llanes, Spain
Measuring 160 feet Gulpiyuri Beach isn’t very long, but its wow-factor is substantial. This inland beach was created by a sinkhole and is surrounded by limestone cliffs and green rolling hillsides. At high tide, the sands disappear. At low tide, the water almost vanishes completely.
Siesta Beach, Florida
Located on Siesta Key, what makes the beach unique is its pristine white sand made of almost 100% quartz crystal. The sand squeaks under your feet as you walk and stays cool even when temperatures soar. This stunning beach is a perfect example of the beauty of nature.
