The Best Places to Visit in California

You’re in need of a vacation – a holiday away from obligations, where the only deadline you’ve got is making it to your massage appointment or a guided tour on time. Whether you’re a seasoned Californian or completely new to the West Coast, here is a list of California destinations sure to offer adventure in many forms.

Cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles may seem like the obvious spots in which to touch down in your private jet, but it’s the skirting towns and expansive wilderness that have really put California on the map throughout history.

San Diego

Starting in the southernmost region of the state is the laid back city of San Diego. Known as the birthplace of California and with one of the best summer climates in the U.S, San Diego is home to extensive beaches great for surfing, sunning, and sight-seeing. And if the beach isn’t your thing, the San Diego Zoo is home to over 3,700 animals, making up more than 650 species. A tram ride through the impressive habitats is just about the closest thing you can experience next to an authentic safari.

Yosemite

When it comes to peaceful relaxation and the meditative quiet that comes with nature, exploring Yosemite is time well-spent. For a truly wild adventure, try hiking into the backcountry for a couple nights of camping under the stars. Or, if you like an outdoorsy itinerary mixed with more luxurious indoor amenities, book your stay at the 4-star Yosemite Ahwahnee Hotel. There you can thrill-seek river-rafting down the Tuolumne, go snow-mobiling or horseback riding by day, and still enjoy the pampering conveniences of resort life upon your return.

Lake Tahoe

Another locale always worth a mention is Lake Tahoe, offering just about every activity you’d ever want to enjoy – all around one alpine lake. But a lesser-known gem is the area is the neighboring town of Truckee. A quieter, quainter version of Tahoe, Truckee is home to Donner Lake and Coyote Moon, a premier 18-hole public golf course. It’s a breath-taking venue for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and other water sports, plus it’s nestled right along the Truckee River, which is known world-wide for it’s family-friendly river rafting. And, when it’s too cold in winter to enjoy the water, it’s prime-time for skiing at historic Squaw Valley, home to the 1960 Winter Olympic games.

Carmel by the Sea

It’s easy to make a holiday in the tiny treasure of Carmel by the Sea. If jet-setting with your four-legged companions is a prerequisite for travel, Carmel is one of the most pet-friendly and all-inclusive little towns in California. Rover is welcome to come on over to not only the beaches, but also to most shops and restaurants. What’s more, it’s not hard to book a pet-friendly stay in Carmel, as most inns and hotels welcome dogs with open doors. Spend an afternoon wine-tasting or shopping, an beachfront sunset with furry friends and family and finish the day with a worldly meal, cooked fresh from any number of satisfying local eateries – an entire day within walking distance.

Sonoma County

And, of course, the list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Solairus’ home, Sonoma County.  When it comes to wine, Sonoma County is where it’s at. The well-known vineyards of Napa may have helped put Californian vino on the map, but the oak-lined country roads of Sonoma, Healdsburg and the Russian River Valley are only just now being tapped for their velvety varietals. Tiny tasting rooms run by close-knit farm families are just as comforting as the belly-warming wine poured in each glass. Not in to wine? Sonoma County has a fast-growing craft beer industry as well. Between the Russian River Brewing Company in Santa Rosa, to Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, Sonoma County isn’t likely to be known anytime soon for its well running dry.
