Last week on the blog we featured a list of the top sights to see when visiting New York City.  When it comes to travel the food you eat is often just as important as the places you visit and the private jet that gets you there.  Being located in Northern California, our Solairus team is somewhat spoiled in regard to gourmet cuisine.  Our foodie tendencies make us pretty picky when it comes to dining out-of-state and we have found New York City to be a place full of fabulous restaurants and delectable dishes.  The following are our top picks for dining in New York City. Enjoy!

Porter House New York

Located in the Time Warner Center, Porter House is the place to go to satisfy a craving for red meat.  The restaurant offers a sleek contemporary-style dining room with leather banquettes for groups and traditional tables smaller parties that lookout into Central Park.  Chef Michael Lomonaco adds flavorful twists to side dishes, like chunks of bacon in creamed spinach and polenta with porcini mushrooms.  Pair any of these with one of the tender, choice cut steaks on the menu and you have a dinner fit for a king.

Grill Room at the Four Seasons Restaurant

A New York classic, The Grill Room at the Four Seasons on East 52nd has been a staple for over half a century.  Hailed as the greatest dining room in the city, the restaurant is credited for introducing the U.S. to menus that change seasonally.  The Grill Room sets the scene for power lunches and special life events, like John F. Kennedy’s 45th birthday party. Signature dishes include the sirloin steak au poivre (peppered steak), bison filet with a truffle sauce, Dover sole filet, Block Island black bass and Maryland crab.

BLT Market

The BLT Market restaurant in at the Central Park Ritz-Carlton is a newer eatery that opened in 2008.  The dining room has a comfortable farmhouse chic ambiance and the menu focuses on market-fresh foods.   The dining options available depend on what’s fresh and in season.  In November, for example, dishes include ingredients like Bosc pears, mushrooms, squash and black cod.

Le Bernardin

The home of owner and celebrity chef Eric Ripert, Le Bernardin is one of the finest premium restaurants in the city.  The interior design is modern, elegant and trendy. Le Bernardin earned its three-Michelin star rating from its superior service and inventive menu items and exotic ingredients.

Per Se

We mentioned Per Se in our Autumn Adventures in New York City post but it definitely bears a second mention.  Per Se is the East Coast, urban counterpart of the of Chef Thomas Keller’s famed French Laundry restaurant in California.  The 16-table eatery in the Time Warner Center sources its ingredients from several small farms to bring you signature and seasonal treats.  While getting reservations can sometimes be difficult, the dining experience makes it well worth the wait.

The Modern

Located at the Museum of Modern Art, the food at The Modern is as eclectic as the museum works of art found here.  A native of Alsace, executive chef Gabriel Kreuther offers a menu of exquisite French-American dishes like grilled foie gras from Sullivan County, Alaskan king crab salad, duck breast and Oestra caviar.  The one-star Michelin restaurant’s Bauhaus-inspired dining room overlooks the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden and features furniture and tableware from notable designers showcased in the MoMA architecture and design collection.
