As a jet-setter, you shy away from the ordinary. When you travel, you seek more than just a ride in your private jet and lodging at a nice hotel. You want an experience; something that’s worth writing about in a postcard, journal or a blog post. As you review the accommodations available during your world travels, consider a stay at a record-setting hotel.

Largest Hotels in the World

The title of largest hotel in the world goes to the Palazzo, an expansion of the Venetian Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. The 2009 AAA Five Diamond Award winner has 6,948,980 square feet of floor space (more than the Pentagon) and 3,068 rooms. When you walk into the lobby, you stand under a 60-foot glass dome with a two-story-tall fountain. In the hotel, you’ll find underground parking, a Lamborghini dealership, upscale shopping boutiques, casino games, simulated beaches, nightclubs, lounges, live entertainment and gourmet dining.

Before 2008, the First World Hotel (Chee Hoe Lee) in Malaysia’s Genting Highlands had the title of world’s largest hotel. When you first enter the grand hotel, you’re greeted with a tropical rainforest in the main entrance, followed by a Spanish courtyard-style lobby. With 500,000 square feet and 6,118 rooms, the First World Hotel also has its own mall, indoor and outdoor theme park, casino, performance stages, arcades, cinema complex and more food choices than a county fair.

With 7,117 rooms, the Izamailovo Hotel in Moscow, Russia is the world’s largest hotel in regards to number of sleeping units. In second place, the MGM Grand Las Vegas has 6,852 rooms.

Hōshi Ryokan, Komatsu, Japan

Oldest Hotels

Charter a private jet to this Island nation and explore the oldest hotels in the world in Japan.  The Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan is an elegant ryokan (a traditional Japanese inn) and hot spring hotel in the Hayakawa area of the Yamanashi Prefecture, near the mountains of Kyoto. The hotel was founded in 705 A.D. and opened its doors in 707 A.D. It’s had over 50 owners, and the current family has operated the establishment for 46 generations.

As the second oldest hotel in the world, the Hōshi Ryokan was founded in 717 A.D. You can find this hotel in Komatsu, in Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture. The same family has operated this hot spring hotel for 46 generations, and legends say that the deity of Hakusan commanded the original owner of the ryokan, Taicho, to build the inn so that the sick could heal themselves in healing waters of the spring.

With accommodations on the 102nd to 118th floors of the International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong, the Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong claims to be the highest hotel in the world.  It sits 1,588 feet above ground level and has a pool and bar on the 118th floor.
